Today I worked with my horse doing slow work along with my mentors guidance. Slow work is just where you go around the pattern at a walk or trot and work on little things like rate where I would ask him to stop or slow down when his shoulder is even to the barrel, keeping a big pocket where I would push him out to where he is far enough away from the barrel. Before I began my slow work we had to warm up. Just like a football player warming up before they play. To warm up we walk around the arena a few times and then trot five laps each way. We then lope some small circles. Also before we began slow work I practiced some rollbacks. Rollbacks are where you take your horse on the rail and first walk down the rail and then ask him to quickly stop and turn. After you do this at a walk a few times you can then work up to a trot and eventually a lope. Doing rollbacks makes your horse think and use his feet getting him used to making those quick turns.
