Today I started working my horse on a 4 barrel drill. This drill is where you set up 4 barrels equally apart from each other so that they are in the shape of a square. You then go around the barrels clockwise and then counter clockwise going around each barrel in the same direction. This drill is supposed to help my horse learn to finish his barrels and turn them well. I worked my horse on this drill for the first time today so we took it slow and just walked it. As we came up to each barrel I asked him to stop when his shoulder was even with the barrel. I then asked him to continue around the barrel as I used my inside leg and inside rein to push him out and round his body around the barrel. Then around the back of the barrel I asked him to move his shoulder in towards the barrel and finish his turn. We repeated this at the walk 4 or 5 times. It was the first day working him on this drill and its already helping.
